Coronavirus (COVID-19) Information on bins, recycling and waste
Page updated 29 June 2020
Rubbish and recycling collections
Rubbish and recycling collections are running as usual. Please put out your green and brown bins on their normal collection days. Check your bin collection day.
Bags containing used tissues should be placed into another bag, tied securely and kept separate from other waste. This should be put aside for at least 72 hours before being put in your usual external household waste bin.
Please remember to clean bin handles and wash your hands after putting bins out for collection and bringing them back in.
New bins or bags
New requests for bins and bags have been suspended until further notice. If you booked a delivery or collection before the stay at home measures were introduced you should have heard from us.
Chelson Meadow recycling centre is now accepting all waste except:
- soil and rubble
- tiles and ceramics
- cardboard (please break this down and place it in your green bin or bag)
- bring-bank (recycling bank) materials
Government advice is still that you should only travel to recycling centres if you cannot store your waste without it risking injury or harm to health – so people should only visit if they really need to.
Restrictions are still in place. Check all the information before setting out and be prepared for long waiting times.
Weston Mill recycling centre remains closed until further notice.
We are working hard to provide as many services as possible and would ask that you try to minimise waste and continue to recycle as much as you can.
Garden waste collections
We are preparing to reintroduce garden waste collections by Monday 24 August - sooner if possible.
In the meantime please home compost where you can, store garden waste on your property until restrictions have been lifted or use a commercial waste collection service.
If you genuinely cannot store your garden waste without risking injury or harm to your health you can consider taking it to Chelson Meadow recycling centre but expect long waiting times.
Our usual bulky waste collection service has been suspended until further notice and all bookings have been cancelled. Please store bulky waste on your property until full services are resumed.
Our advice is to postpone any DIY and other major projects that will create extra waste unless you have somewhere to store it. Don’t put it in your normal bins or back lanes.
Other commercial waste collection services
There are lots of local private businesses that can collect and dispose of your waste. Check you are using a registered waste carrier as you are responsible if your waste ends up flytipped.
You can check whether a business is an authorised carrier (or exempt from registering) on the Environment Agency’s public register.
You can see if the business is also Trading Standards approved on the Buy With Confidence website.
Commercial waste disposal
The Transfer station at Chelson Meadow is open to commercial waste customers during the following times:
Monday to Thursday: 8am to 4pm
Friday: 8am to 3.30pm
Saturday and Sunday: Closed
Trade waste applications
Trade waste applications are currently suspended.
All other bins, recycling and waste services are currently running as usual. We are reviewing our services daily and this page will be updated with any changes.
