Getting rid of large waste items

If you have larger waste or recycling that you want to get rid of, there are a number of options available to you.

Bulky Waste collections are for items from your home that are too big to fit in your normal residential waste bin.

If you have a business that needs waste collecting read our trade waste collection page for more information.

Donate it

Please consider donating any unwanted items that are in good condition to charities and other organisations that could make use of them.

Furniture and electrical items can be collected for free by many charities and community projects - you would need to contact them individually to find out what they take and how to arrange a collection.

There are also websites that can help people give items in good condition to each other for reuse and recycling:

Sell it

Some people choose to sell items they no longer want using online auction sites and social media. Beds, furniture, and electrical items (even if they no longer work) are often bought and sold privately.

There is some general advice on how to do this safely on GetSafeOnline.org.

There are many different places you can sell items online. Most have additional advice on how to sell safely using their pages. If you are considering using any of these sites, please find and read their safety advice first. Here are some links to popular examples:

Recycle it

If your bulky items aren’t in good condition, you can take them to either of our recycling centres:

Please remember to bring photo ID and proof of address showing you are a Plymouth resident. If you are going to be using a van or are bringing a trailer you will only be able to drop items off at Chelson Meadow, and please remember to have your free van/trailer permit ready before you visit.

Don't dump it!

Fly-tipping is a crime and you could face a £400 fixed penalty notice, or if you don't pay this within 14 days and it has to be dealt with via courts, an unlimited fine, and it could even result in a prison sentence. Dumping old furniture and other items on the street or in your back lane, is fly-tipping.

You can report issues with fly-tipping via our website here:

Book it - local businesses

Local businesses may be able to offer more suitable collection services compared to the Council, such as flexible collection times, and collection from inside your property. Also, some items including boilers and washing machines include scrap metals which can be valuable; some companies will collect for free of even pay for a sufficient amount.

As a householder, you must take reasonable steps to ensure any household waste produced on your property is only transferred to an authorised person. If you use a commercial waste collection service, you need to check whether the business is an authorised carrier or exempt from registering as a waste carrier. You can check whether a waste carrier is registered on the Environment Agency’s public register.

An authorised person includes licensed businesses and the local authority that provides your normal waste collection service.
