SWDWP - Visits and Education

The Energy from Waste Facility has a purpose built Visitor Centre to accommodate the Partnership and MVV’s commitment to engaging with the local community, schools and colleges.

Through the Community Liaison Manager, MVV offer a range of activities including a tour of the plant, technical presentations, workshops and an education programme to improve understanding towards the waste hierarchy and waste resource management.

The waste hierarchy ranks waste management options according to what is best for the environment. It gives top priority to preventing waste in the first place. When waste is created, it gives priority to preparing it for re-use, then recycling, then recovery, and last of all disposal (e.g. landfill). The 5 stages of the waste hierarchy are:

  • Reduce – lowering the amount of waste produced

  • Re-use – using materials repeatedly

  • Recycle – using materials to make new products

  • Recovery – recovering energy from waste

  • Disposal – safe disposal of waste to landfill
