Cabinet hears progress in delivering priorities for Plymouth

Plymouth City Council is delivering its key priorities for the city while also tackling serious financial challenges head on, Council leader Richard Bingley says.

The priorities, which were formally agreed by Cabinet in July, pledge that the Council will focus on creating more high quality jobs for Plymouth; good quality, green homes; decent education and access to first class health and care.

Councillor Bingley updated the Cabinet on Thursday (6 October) with the latest progress in delivering the priorities. Recent progress includes:

  • Plymouth being identified as one of the areas in the country for consideration by the government to have an Investment Zone.
  • The commissioning of a new port strategy to unleash Plymouth’s full potential as a major international port.
  • Starting pre-construction design work for the new-look Armada Way, which will modernise the landscaping and provide a better place for shopping, playing and relaxing.
  • Welcoming the prestigious British Art Show (BAS9) to the city.
  • Opening the latest Wellbeing Hub in Mount Gould at the William and Patricia Venton Centre, working alongside partners.
  • Progressing plans for a West End health hub and following approval of the business case.
  • Helping ensure people can leave hospital in a timely way by working with partners to implement new ‘out of hospital’ services, including opening a 40 bed Care Hotel at the end of the month
  • Running recruitment campaigns with key partners to attract more people to careers in vital health and care roles in Plymouth.
  • Expanding mental health support for children and adults in the city.
  • Progressing the development of a Council-owned site in Kings Tamerton for up to 70 affordable, net-zero carbon homes.
  • Working in partnership with Plymouth Community Homes on plans for 140 affordable and energy-efficient homes in the Millbay regeneration area.
  • Agreeing a new Armed Forces Covenant, which commits to supporting serving and retired servicemen personnel find suitable accommodation.

Councillor Bingley said: “Our latest progress update shows we are making very strong progress in delivering on our priorities for Plymouth despite the very serious financial challenges we are currently facing.

“We do have difficult decisions to make in the coming months as we grapple with rising energy costs and increasing demand for social care services but the cost of living crisis makes it more important than ever that we remain ambitious for Plymouth and keep up the momentum in delivering higher value jobs, affordable green homes, better education and access to good health care.

“We will continue working hard to unleash Plymouth’s full potential to help ensure our city emerges from the latest economic situation even stronger and more resilient for the future.

“Our Ocean City is a magnificent city with untapped potential which deserves our outward ambition for higher value jobs and international-standard transport connectivity.”
