City gives thanks to incredible carers

Thank you. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

That is our message to all of the partners and staff who came together to support and care for our most vulnerable adults during the coronavirus pandemic.

During the pandemic, partners from several different sectors worked together to ensure that our most vulnerable residents were cared for.

Whether they were in their own home, in a care home, extra care or supported living scheme or shielding, Plymouth’s army of carers continued to ensure that people were provided with personal care, emotional support, online activities, shopping, medicine collection and were supported with paying bills and accessing money.

So this week, from Monday 7 until Friday 11 September, we’re showing our appreciation to everyone who did their bit.

This week from 8pm, our very own Smeaton’s Tower will be lit as a symbol of the city's gratitude. It will continue to be lit in a blue bask every night until Friday.

We have also launched an online book of thanks so that residents who were supported by our fantastic support partners and their amazing staff during the pandemic, will have the chance to show their gratitude.

Councillor Kate Taylor, Cabinet member for Adult Health and Social Care, will also be personally visiting some of the organisations who made this possible to present thousands of people with a letter and Caring for Plymouth badge.

Kate said: “This year has been a year like no other; it is a year that none of us would have predicted would turn out like it has. The coronavirus global pandemic of 2020 has taken hold of the world, and our lives, and we have witnessed our country and city stand still.

“But there has been a beacon of hope in Plymouth. The sacrifices and services provided by people in caring for Plymouth when it was most in needed have underlined just what a wonderful city we live in.

“We thank you from the bottom of our hearts – for everything you have done and continue to do. You are all heroes.”

Council Chief Executive Tracey Lee added: “The people of the city and all of our carers have continued to rise to every challenge thrown at them by the pandemic and I want to express a huge thanks for the incredible work that has been achieved.

“What you have sacrificed and delivered in equal measure is nothing short of incredible. In spite of the daily frustrations, the risks, the anxiety around the unknown, you just kept going.

“You are our real heroes and I thank you for being there and for being those who supported our city when we needed it most.“
