Crews work to keep A38 safe

Our cleansing crews are removing debris and rubbish from the Plymouth stretch of the A38 this week.

It’s essential to keep this key route clear of any potential hazards to road users and we work with Highways England to remove accumulated rubbish at regular intervals.

Councillor Sue Dann, Cabinet Member for Environment and Street Scene said: “Our crews are working hard to keep the city moving, clean and safe during the coronavirus outbreak.

“The A38 may be quieter than usual but it is a major strategic route for the region and also carries local traffic.

“All sorts of rubbish finds its way to the verges – from coffee cups to blown out tyres – and it’s absolutely crucial that we regularly clear the debris that builds up to help keep road users safe.

“Our crews are, of course, working in line with COVID-19 safety guidelines.”

Paul Vosper, Service Manager for Highways England, said: “Litter poses a safety risk as it can obstruct important road markings and signage.

“Highways England roads remain open and we will continue to maintain the network to ensure life-saving medicine, equipment, supplies and healthcare staff can travel to where they are needed most.

“Our maintenance work includes our seasonal litter-picking programme on the A38 with local authority partners.”

Teams have already cleared as much as they can from layby areas but now need to close a lane in each direction to complete the work.

Because the road is much quieter than usual, Highways England have agreed for this to take place during the day, which is easier than working overnight.

Work will take place on the eastbound side today (Tuesday) and tomorrow and on the westbound side on Thursday and Friday.
