Plymouth stands in solidarity with Ukraine

Plymouth City Council stands behind the people of Ukraine and has:

  • Issued a statement of solidarity on 24 February. At the full Council meeting on 28 February, all councillors stood united in their anger and concern about what is happening in Ukraine.
  • Lit Smeaton’s Tower in yellow and blue on 25 February and continues to fly the national Ukrainian flag outside the Guildhall. Partners have also shown their support, with the Plymouth City Centre Company lighting up the side of House of Fraser and along Royal Parade.
  • Agreed to suspend Plymouth's twinning link with Novorossiysk in light of the atrocities committed by the Russian government on the people of Ukraine.
  • Announced a new cross-party task group to help ensure that Plymouth is ready to support refugees as they arrive.

Plymouth City Council will also do what it can to avoid purchasing items or services supplied from Russian companies, given the flagrant law-breaking of their own state, and we urge all other local authorities to do the same.

We can also confirm Gazprom are not one of our energy suppliers and none of our investments involve Russian or Belarusian assets or funds.
