The court heard how in May 2021 the Council was contacted by Plymouth Community Homes (PCH) about an abandoned mattress left near a bin store in Granby Street.

PCH provided CCTV images that showed the woman placing the mattress.

She was identified and issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice for £400. However, despite several reminders, it was went unpaid and she was summonsed to court.

Magistrates noted the Council's no-nonsense approach to fly-tipping and fined her £590.

She was also ordered to pay £200 in costs and a £59 victim surcharge and will now hold a criminal record.

Councillor Maddi Bridgeman, Cabinet member for the Environment and Street Scene, said: "I've said it time and time again and I'll continue saying it: fly-tipping is not tolerated in Plymouth.

"There is no magic furniture fairy. If you bought it and had it delivered and then you want to get rid of it, do it responsibly. Don't make the tax payer pick up your tab."
