Final call to be election ready

There are five days to go for residents to apply for free voter photo ID. Applications need to be made by 5pm on Tuesday 25 April.

National changes mean that for the first time ever, residents who choose to vote in person at a polling station on Thursday 4 May will need to show photo ID. Where a voter turns up at a polling station without ID, they will be asked to return home to find ID before they can be issued with a ballot paper. A poll card alone will not entitle someone to vote.

Accepted forms of ID include a UK, European Economic Area (EEA) or Commonwealth passport; a full or provisional UK, EEA or Commonwealth drivers’ licence; some concessionary travel passes, such as an older person’s bus pass and a blue badge.

Anyone who does not have one of the accepted forms of ID must apply for free Voter Authority Certificate online or by completing a paper form which is available from the Council.

Tracey Lee, Returning Officer for Plymouth, said: "As the deadline to apply for free ID looms, it is important that residents of Plymouth make sure they’re election ready.

“This year’s elections are different. I’d urge anyone planning to vote in person to take action now to make sure they’re able to do so.

“If you plan to vote at a polling station, please check now whether you have eligible photo ID and if not make sure you apply for a Voter Authority Certificate. The last thing we want is for anyone to miss out because of these new national rules.”

Anyone without eligible photo ID can apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate.

Acceptable photo ID can be used even if it is out of date as long as the photo is still a good likeness of the elector.

More information on the election is available on the Plymouth City Council website at: Voting and elections | PLYMOUTH.GOV.UK
