Citizenship ceremony

Before you can attend a citizenship ceremony you must apply to the Home Office for British citizenship. You can apply directly to the Home Office yourself, use a solicitor/agent or use our nationality checking service.

Group ceremonies are held every month in the Lord Mayor's reception room with the Lord Mayor or his deputy. During the ceremony we talk about what it means to be British and part of the community in Plymouth. The union flag and the portrait of the Queen are on display and the national anthem is played at the end of the ceremony.

The following oath and pledge must be made by each new British citizen:

I (name) swear by Almighty God or do solemnly, sincerely and truly declare and affirm that on becoming a British citizen, I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, her heirs and successors, according to law.

I will give my loyalty to the United Kingdom and respect its rights and freedoms. I will uphold its democratic values. I will observe its laws faithfully and fulfil my duties and obligations as a British citizen.

After taking the oath and pledge, new citizens receive their certificate and sign the citizen register. The nationality certificate is presented by the Lord Mayor (on behalf of the Home Secretary) and can be used to support passport applications or prove British citizenship. After the ceremony new citizens and their guests are invited to have light refreshments and photos with the Lord Mayor.

If you're unable to attend the group ceremony call 01752 268331 or email regoff@plymouth.gov.uk to discuss individual ceremony options.
