What can I put in my garden waste bag?

Please only put green garden waste in your garden bags and spread the weight between bags or collections.

If it is raining please keep the contents dry to avoid adding to the weight of the bags.

Please put the following in your household garden waste bag:

  • flowers
  • grass cuttings
  • hedge trimmings
  • plants
  • twigs and branches up to 7cm in width
  • weeds.

Please do not put any of these in your garden waste bag:

  • food
  • Japanese knotweed or ragwort
  • plant pots or trays
  • soil, rubble, stone
  • large branches
  • vegetable peelings
  • any other non-plant material.

Most of these will need to be taken to your nearest recycling centre for disposal, with the exception of Japanese knotweed or ragwort. These persistent weeds cannot be composted and you must dispose of them appropriately.

If your bags contain the wrong items they will not be emptied. Please remove any contamination before your next scheduled collection or take extra waste to your nearest recycling centre.

Japanese knotweed can not go in your garden waste recycling bags and should not be taken to the recycling centres either - it needs to be disposed of carefully.

More information about Japanese knotweed and how to dispose of it is on the gov.uk website here.

Ragwort can not go in your garden waste recycling bags and should not be taken to the recycling centres either - it needs to be disposed of carefully.

More information about ragwort and how to dispose of it is on the gov.uk website here.
