City centre regeneration

Building on the success of the 60,000m2 Drake Circus shopping scheme which opened in 2006, the City Council is now proposing additional major retail development in the adjoining areas of Cornwall Street of up to 86,000m2.

Seven hundred new homes are also proposed as part of the proposals that are included in the City Centre and University Area Action Plan which was adopted in April 2010. It is proposed that this project will include a landmark department store and up to 2,000 new car parking spaces to replace the existing car parks.

Elsewhere in the city centre, there is also potential for new development, such as Colin Campbell Court adjoining Western Approach, which has the potential for a mixed-use scheme which is also outlined in the Area Action Plan.

The creation of new jobs in retailing and business services is one of the key sectors for economic growth set out in the Council's Local Economic Strategy 2006 to 2026.
