Coronavirus (COVID-19) Information about libraries

Current measures within libraries will continue to remain in place until further notice.

Library opening hours

All libraries are open to the public for browsing books, book returns, collection of reserved books and PC use. 

​​​​​​The opening hours are:

  • Central Library is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm and Saturdays, 10am to 4pm
  • Crownhill Library is open on Mondays and Wednesdays, 9am to 6pm and Saturdays, 10am to 1pm
  • Devonport Library is open on Mondays and Wednesdays, 11am to 5pm
  • Efford Library is open on Mondays and Thursdays, 11am to 5pm
  • Estover Library is open on Tuesdays and Fridays, 11am to 5pm
  • North Prospect Library is open on Wednesdays and Fridays, 11am to 5pm
  • Peverell Library will be open on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 11am to 5pm
  • Plympton Library is open Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9am to 6pm and Saturdays, 10am to 1pm
  • Plymstock Library is open Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9am to 5pm, Wednesdays and Fridays, 9am to 6pm and Saturdays, 10am to 1pm
  • St Budeaux Library is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9am to 6pm and Saturdays, 10am to 1pm
  • Southway Library is open on Tuesdays and Fridays, 9am to 6pm and Saturdays, 10am to 1pm.

Pop-up Libraries at Tothill Community Centre and Four Greens at Whitleigh will remain closed until further notice.

The following measures are in place for your safety:

  • on entry to the library you must use the hand sanitiser provided
  • we encourage you to check in with the NHS Test and Trace QR code or provide staff with your details
  • social distancing must be observed
  • you must follow directional signs and staff instructions
  • there is a limit on how many people are allowed inside the library at any one time
  • protective screens at counters where you need to interact with our staff

Face coverings

The Government has lifted mandatory rules but has warned that COVID-19 remains a threat and it expects people to wear face coverings in crowded areas. Our buildings are confined, indoor spaces and can become busy. Taking precautions will protect you, as well as our staff and help us keep services open. Exemptions still apply. Test and Trace

All visitors to our library buildings will be encouraged to scan the displayed QR code with the NHS Covid-19 app upon entry as part of the NHS Test and Trace system.
If you are unable to scan the code, you can submit your details to a member of staff so that we can keep a record of your visit.

Returning books

You can return any books that you have on loan to any Plymouth library. We will ask you to return them via the self service machines.

Reserving items

You can reserve items online by logging into the online library catalogue or using the Plymouth Library app with your library card number and PIN. Browse the catalogue, make your reservation and choose any Plymouth Library as your collection point.

An email will be sent to you once your items are ready for you to collect.

We are currently unable to take requests for items not listed on the catalogue.

Public computers at our libraries

A reduced number of computers are available to book during our current opening hours. Sessions are for 2 hours. Printing services are also available at a charge.

When you call or email us please let us know your library card number and the library that you would like to book a computer.

The following measures are in place for your safety:

  • sanitiser wipes available for you to wipe down work stations before and after use
  • we will not be able to offer one to one support at this time
  • if you need to bring someone to help you use a PC please let us know in advance

Loans 

You can renew items for up to 3 weeks with your Plymouth Library card number and PIN on the Library app, on our website or by emailing us at library@plymouth.gov.uk

Fines 

From Monday 23 August, overdue charges will be reinstated. Charges incurred from the end of March last year until 22 August will be waived.

Join the library 

You can join the library online or at any Plymouth Library. If you join online, go to any library to collect your library card and activate your membership.

Library Online 

You can download free eBooks, eAudiobooks and eMagazines with your library card as well as digital comics and newspapers. Visit our Library Online page

Events and activities 

Many regular activities and events that are held in libraries have been temporarily suspended but we do have some regular activities hosted on our Facebook page.

  • Storytimes – every Monday and Friday at 10am
  • Rhymetimes – every Wednesday at 10am
  • Book Troop - book group fourth Wednesday of each month at 11am
  • Big Up Your Book - book group for children every Wednesday at 4pm

Other services paused at this time

  • use of study spaces and seating areas
  • assisted digital appointments for one to one help with online forms e.g Blue Badge applications
  • some meeting rooms are not available so please check with your library for availability

Select and Collect

To use this service, let us know what kind of books you like to read by completing the Select and Collect online order form.  We’ll select up to three books for you. We will contact you when they are ready for you to collect from the library. 

We aim to find books you will enjoy. We may not always get it right but we hope to introduce you to new books and authors.
