Opening hours of libraries

All libraries are open to the public for browsing books, book returns, collection of reserved books and PC use. 

​​​​​​The opening hours are:

  • Central Library will be open Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm and Saturdays, 10am to 4pm
  • Crownhill Library will be open on Mondays and Wednesdays, 9am to 6pm and Saturdays, 10am to 1pm
  • Devonport Library will be open on Mondays and Wednesdays, 11am to 5pm
  • Efford Library will be open on Mondays and Thursdays, 11am to 5pm
  • Estover Library will be open on Tuesdays and Fridays, 11am to 5pm
  • North Prospect Library will be open on Wednesdays and Fridays, 11am to 5pm
  • Peverell Library will be open on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 11am to 5pm
  • Plympton Library will be open Mondays and Thursdays, 9am to 6pm and Saturdays, 10am to 1pm
  • Plymstock Library will be open Wednesdays and Fridays, 9am to 6pm and Saturdays, 10am to 1pm
  • St Budeaux Library will be open on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9am to 6pm and Saturdays, 10am to 1pm
  • Southway Library will be open on Tuesdays and Fridays, 9am to 6pm and Saturdays, 10am to 1pm.

Pop-up Libraries at Tothill Community Centre and Four Greens at Whitleigh will remain closed until further notice.

The following measures are in place for your safety:

  • anyone entering the library must wear a face covering
  • on entry to the library you must use the hand sanitiser provided
  • you must check in with the NHS Test and Trace QR code or provide staff with your details
  • social distancing must be observed
  • a one way system is in place
  • you must follow directional signs and staff instructions
  • there is a limit on how many people are allowed inside the library at any one time
  • protective screens at counters where you need to interact with our staff.

Test and Trace

All visitors to our library buildings will be required to scan the displayed QR code with the NHS Covid-19 app upon entry as part of the NHS Test and Trace system.
If you are unable to scan the code, you will be asked to submit your details to a member of staff so that we can keep a record of your visit.

Returning books

You are welcome to return any books that you have on loan to any Plymouth library. We will ask you to place all returned items in a box at the entrance.

Reserving items

You can reserve items online by logging into the online library catalogue or using the Plymouth Library app with your library card number and PIN. Browse the catalogue, make your reservation and choose any Plymouth Library as your collection point.

An email will be sent to you once your items are ready for you to collect.

We are currently unable to take requests for items not listed on the catalogue.

Public computers at our libraries

A reduced number of computers are available to book during our current opening hours. Sessions are for a maximum of 45 minutes. Printing services are also available at a charge.

When you call or email us please let us know your library card number and the library that you would like to book a computer.

The following measures have been introduced for your safety:

  • workstations are cleaned between appointments
  • we will not be able to offer one to one support at this time
  • if you need to bring someone to help you use a PC please let us know in advance

Loans 

You can renew items for 14 weeks with your Plymouth Library card number and PIN on the Library app, on our website or by emailing us at library@plymouth.gov.uk.

Fines 

No overdue charges will accrue on any loan or renewal from Friday 20 March 2020, until further notice.

Join the library 

You can join the library online or at any Plymouth Library. If you join online, go to any library to collect your library card and activate your membership.

Library Online 

You can download free eBooks, eAudiobooks and eMagazines with your library card as well as digital comics and newspapers. Visit our Library Online page

Events and activities 

Regular activities and events that are held in libraries have been temporarily suspended but we do have some regular activities hosted on our Facebook page.

Storytimes – Every Monday and Friday at 10am

Rhymetimes – Every Wednesday at 10am

Book Troop - book group fourth Wednesday of each month at 11am

Other services paused at this time

  • meeting room hire
  • use of study spaces and seating areas
  • photocopying
  • assisted digital appointments for one to one help with online forms e.g Blue Badge applications.

Select and Collect

To use this service, let us know what kind of books you like to read by completing the Select and Collect online order form.  We’ll select up to three books for you. We will contact you when they ready for you to collect from the library. 

We aim to find books you will enjoy. We may not always get it right but we hope to introduce you to new books and authors.

When you contact us, we will require the following: 

  • your name
  • your library card number
  • your phone number or your email address
  • your preferred format: Fiction / Non-fiction / Large print / Audiobook
  • your preferred age category: Children / Young adult / Adult
  • your preferred genre (fiction) or subject (non-fiction).
