Council leader responds to local government funding announcement

Responding to the Government announcement on 24 January of additional funding for social care, Council Leader Tudor Evans said: “Along with the rest of the local government community, we have repeatedly lobbied the Government to take notice of the very severe financial pressures facing councils across the country and the crisis facing social care provision as costs and demand pressures have continued to rise.

“While the announcement of some additional funding for social care is very welcome, it falls very short of going anywhere near solving the ongoing problems facing the entire sector. We don’t need constant sticking plasters and temporary solutions from the Government – we need a sustainable, long-term funding settlement that addresses the systemic issues.

“We now need to see the detail of how this funding will be allocated when we receive our final funding settlement, which we are expecting next month.

“The additional funding also comes with conditions and we hope this does not add a further layer of unnecessary bureaucracy on local councils.”
