Signs warning of fines

Drink responsibly sign Spotted these yet? These are polite reminders to anyone tempted to get a bit lairy that it they could end up £500 out of pocket.

These signs are now appearing around the city to remind people that a new Public Space Protection Order is in place to cut down booze-related bad behaviour.

The order covers the entire city and makes it an offence for anyone who refuses to stop drinking alcohol or hand over any bottles or cans which are believed to contain alcohol, when asked to do so by a police officer or authorised officer who, in their view, believes this would assist in preventing further anti-social behaviour, public nuisance or disorder.

The order has replaced smaller PSPOs which were covering Stonehouse, the city centre, Devonport, North Hill, Mutley, Tothill Park and Freedom Fields.

Councillor Sally Haydon, Cabinet member for Customer Focus and Community Safety, said: “I know we are all looking forward to a time when we can meet up and enjoy a sociable drink with friends - God knows, it’s been a while!

“But we cannot have the behaviour of small of people ruin it for others, which is why we are letting people know now that we can and will take action against loutish drunken behaviour. This is not what we want Plymouth to be about.

This PSPO is not a blanket alcohol ban. It is entirely focussed on anti-social behaviour. They give the police, the Council and PARC rangers, extra powers to clamp down on anti-social behaviour, offering a quick resolution to emerging anti-social behaviour issues, particularly among problem drinkers, but also keeping the doors open to both support and enforcement options.

It is hoped that the PSPO will provide a consistent approach across the city, leaving no room for confusion over boundaries or prohibitions.
