Leader welcomes announcements

Council Leader Nick Kelly has welcomed the Chancellor's budget on Wednesday, saying it included announcements that would be benefit Plymouth.

Councillor Kelly said: "The ambition of this budget was impressive and there’s a lot in it for us to digest. We’ll be working out the impact on Plymouth when we have all the detail.

“I think it came across as a positive, forward-looking budget that promises to build a stronger economy, which is a big priority for Plymouth as we recover from the pandemic. I’m sure the city’s retail, hospitality and leisure trade, which has been hit so hard over the last 18 months, will welcome the business rates discount announced by the Chancellor.

“I’m pleased to see there’s more funding for healthcare, schools, education and skills and for more affordable – all critical issues for Plymouth.

“I’m also pleased to see there will be more grant funding for local councils over the next three years and look forward to the details of what this means for us in Plymouth."

The budget announcement included confirmation that the Woolwell to The George transport scheme has been awarded £19.9 million from the Government’s Levelling Up Fund to tackle congestion and improve public transport on one of our busiest roads.

The multi-million pound scheme will replace Woolwell Roundabout with a signalised junction. Tavistock Road will also be widened to provide on and off road cycle paths, wide pavements and safer crossing points, and a dual carriageway on this section.
