Sign up for new wheeled bin garden waste collections

Residents are being urged to sign up for next year’s garden waste collections in plenty of time.

As announced earlier this year, the service will be moving from bags to wheeled bins, in line with industry best practice.

Registration is now open with households who register before 7 January able to receive delivery of their new wheelie bin free of charge.

Also in the registration process is the option to order either a 140 litre or a 240 litre bin.

How do I sign up?

It’s really simple – just log onto www.plymouth.gov.uk/gardenwaste and follow the instructions.  If you need help to register online you can ask someone else to register on your behalf.

Even if you were registered this year, it’s really important that you sign up this year too so that we can arrange for delivery of your new bin ready for next year’s collection to start. Remember that if you haven’t got a bin, we won’t be able to collect your garden waste.

Why are you making this change?

The change in policy is being introduced in line with industry best practice around manual handling health and safety for staff.

In 2019, the teams lifted more than 4,400 tonnes of garden waste throughout the year, all of which had to be physically hauled from the ground into refuse vehicles.

In contrast, the new wheelie bins are easier to move and are mechanically lifted by the vehicle. They will also keep garden waste dry and tidy and will be easier to clean.

The new wheelie bins will have far less impact on the environment as they have a much longer lifespan than the difficult-to-recycle bags, are less likely to go missing, get torn or blow away unlike the bags which have limited durability.

I don't want a bin - can I keep using bags?

Sorry, but no. We’re moving the whole service over to bins. We only be collecting garden waste that is put out in bins. You can keep the bags, though. They’re all yours for whatever you wish to do with them.

When will my new bin be delivered?

Bins are planned to be delivered to households who have signed up early in February and March, in time for collections beginning in April. Once you’ve registered, we’ll be in touch early in 2021 to confirm delivery.

What if I don't register before 7 January?

Then we won’t be able to guarantee that you get a new bin in time for the start of the service in April. We’ll also be charging a £15 delivery fee for anyone that is late registering.

Anything else?

Just one thing. In order to use the service, you'll have to be able to keep your new bin inside the boundary of your property.
