Bulky waste collections set to return

Bulky waste collections will be returning this autumn.

The service, which was suspended in 2020 to allow for prioritisation of domestic collections, will begin again in October. Bookings will be taken from the end of September.

The break in the service has allowed the Council to analyse residents' use of the service and make a few subtle changes to the pricing and booking system.

Previously, residents were charged £20 for the collection of up to three items, and £40 for the collection of up to six items.

Now, residents will be able to dispose of four items for £25 and then £10 per item thereafter.

In addition, where collections used to be free of charge for recipients of Council Tax, Housing, Income Support or Pension Credit benefits, a 50 per cent discount will apply for Council Tax support recipients only.

These changes not only reflects residents' use of the service in previous years, but following an extensive benchmarking exercise, ensures that the cost of bulky waste collection in Plymouth remains  below that of other local authorities.

Councillor Maddi Bridgeman, Cabinet member for the Environment and Street Scene, said: "We promised to get the basics right and take a hard stance on fly-tipping, so I'm delighted that bulky waste collections are returning.

"Yes, there are a few changes, but we want to ensure that residents get value for money, will make good use of the service and hopefully prevent large items ending up abandoned in back lanes. It is cheaper now than before for up to four items and that represents 90 per cent of the collections.”

Further communications on how to book a bulky waste collection will be made in September.
