Council pays tribute to Freeman Tom Savery

Plymouth City Council is saddened to hear of the death of former councillor and Honorary Freeman of the City, Tom Savery.

Tom Savery served as a Conservative councillor on Plymouth City Council from 1966 and was Leader of the Council between 1987 and 1991.

He also served as the Shadow Leader from 1991 to 1997 and was Lord Mayor from 1999 to 2000.

As an active serving member of the Council for the majority of his life, he chaired and led many committees with authority and integrity.

He was made an Honorary Freeman of the City in 1998, the same year as the City Council became a unitary authority.

Councillor Sue Dann, Lord Mayor of Plymouth, said:  “Tom Savery was a highly respected councillor by all members of the Council, and dedicated a lot of time throughout his life to helping others and the people of Plymouth.

“As a politician, he was very knowledgeable and was well known for his quick wit and sense of humour. Our thoughts are with those that loved and knew him at this difficult time.”

A service of celebration and thanksgiving for his life will be held at The Minster Church of St Andrew on Thursday 15 September at 1pm, followed by a private cremation.
