Eco-homes scheme gets funding boost

A ground-breaking eco-home scheme has taken a further step towards reality thanks to significant investment.

The scheme, which gained outline planning permission in December 2021, will see a council-owned site off Coombe Way, Kings Tamerton used for up to 70 affordable, net-zero carbon homes.

Delivered by local partners PEC Homes (set up by local charity, Plymouth Energy Community), this will be the first new-build scheme in England to use the innovative ‘Energiesprong’ approach to achieve net zero. The project will also be designed using ‘One Planet principles’, ensuring it is truly sustainable.

Now, backed as part of the Council's award-winning Plan for Homes, which promotes exploring innovation in housing delivery, £330,000 has been allocated to the Capital Programme from section 106 contributions to allow the scheme to progress.

Section 106 funds are paid to the local authority by developers to fund infrastructure in the area of their build. In this case, the monies have come from the development of the nearby energy from waste plant.

Councillor Rebecca Smith, Cabinet member for Homes and Communities, said: "I'm really pleased to have signed off this decision which will help to turn these innovative plans into a reality.

"We said that one of our priorities was delivering good quality green homes and investments like this show that we are serious about that ambition.

"Plymouth needs schemes like this and we're going to do our best to make sure they get built with the help of our partners at PEC Homes.

"I look forward to seeing this project progress towards construction."

Alistair Macpherson, Chief Executive of PEC, added, “This funding supports our ambition to drive innovation in how we build new homes and allows our community to be part of the solution to tackle fuel poverty and climate change.”

The support of this scheme ticks off yet another action on the Council's Climate Emergency Action Plan. In addition, it also forms part of an Eco Homes Programme, as featured in the Leader’s Delivery Plan.
