Litterers handed court fines

Yet more litter louts have been before the courts this week, with some ordered to pay more than £450.

In all, nine cases were heard by Plymouth Magistrates Court on Monday.

The court heard how each had been witnessed dropping litter by one of the Council's environmental enforcement officers and issued with fixed penalty notices for £100.

But despite several reminders, the FPNs went unpaid and they were summonsed to court.

Seven of the offenders failed to show and were found guilty in their absence. They were handed fines of £220, costs of £200 and a victim surcharge of £34.

Two more attended to contest their case but were also found guilty. They were both handed a fine of £100, costs of £50 and a £34 victim surcharge.

Councillor Maddi Bridgeman, Cabinet member for Environment and Street Scene, said: "Littering is a real blight on our great city and I'm glad that those who have disrespected Plymouth in such a manner have found it has come at a significant personal cost.

"We have some big plans to increase enforcement for environmental crimes like these so litterers beware - you won't get away with behaviour like this in our city."
