Plymouth welcomes tall ship Dar Mlodziezy

Plymouth Sound will be home to the second largest tall ship in the world for the next five days.

The Dar Mlodziezy, registered in Plymouth’s twin city, Gdynia, Poland is a sail training ship and measures in at 109m long and at just over 62m tall.

The ship arrived in the sound on Wednesday night and will be staying in the sound until her departure, where she will leave for Portugal.

The Lord Mayor of Plymouth will accept a call from the Master of the Ship later in the week for tea and cake.

Plymouth and Gdynia became twinned in 1976 following a suggestion by the Plymouth Anglo-Polish Cultural Society. The partnership was one of the first between Britain and Poland.

Plymouth and Gdynia each promised to strengthen the ties between the two countries which were forged during the Second World War.

Gdynia is the namesake for a few city landmarks, including Gdynia Fountain at St Andrews Cross roundabout, and of course Gdynia Way, one of the key routes into Plymouth.

The bridge recently benefitted from some new art work, which was designed by James Edgar following his visit to Gdynia. The design was inspired by ideas he gained from working with the children from the Plymouth Saturday Polish School.
