Tick Tock – deadline looms to register to vote by post for May election!

The deadline is looming for people to register to vote and apply for their postal vote for this year’s Council and Police and Crime Commissioner elections on Thursday 6 May. The last chance to register to vote by post will be 5pm on Tuesday 20 April.

There are a number of ways to cast your vote. You can vote in person at a polling station, by post, or by appointing someone you trust to vote on your behalf, which is known as a proxy vote. You must be registered to vote before you can apply for a postal or proxy vote.

Residents who are not already on the electoral register must register by midnight on Monday 19 April. If you receive and pay Council Tax bills you are not automatically included on the register. People can check if their name appears on the register by calling 01752 304866.

Whilst Council officers are working hard to ensure that polling stations will be COVID-safe, we understand that many people may prefer to have their say in the elections from the comfort of their own home. If this is how people want to vote, they are being urged to get their postal vote application in as soon as possible.

Tracey Lee, Chief Executive and Returning Officer for Plymouth City Council, said:

“There is only one week left to make sure you are registered to vote, and if you want to vote by post make sure we have your application by the 20 April. For proxy voters the deadline is a week later on the 27 April.

“It’s quick and easy – it all takes just five minutes online.

"Also, if you have recently turned 18 or moved home, it is particularly important that you act to ensure that you are registered to vote.

"If you were registered to vote in the last election and your details have not changed, you don’t need to take any action, but if you are in any doubt, please get in touch.”
