T'is the season to shop safely

The Barbican at Christmas Shoppers are being urged to plan ahead and think about when’s the best time for a stress-free and safe shopping experience in Plymouth’s fantastic stores.

The best time to shop and how to shop safely should be at the top of people’s shopping lists as they plot and plan their trips in the run up to Christmas.

With the lockdown lifting and non-essential shops due to open on 2 December, the Council, the City Centre Company and Plymouth Waterfront Partnership are working with retailers to make sure measures are in place to keep people safe this Christmas.

Opening hours
Many shops will be staying open later every day and late night shopping will be taking place every Thursday with many shops open until 9pm.

The busiest times are expected to be weekday lunchtimes and weekends. Some shops will also be opening earlier particularly in Drake Circus. Shoppers are being urged to come in early or late to beat the queues.

Plymouth Market will reopen fully and will be open every Sunday before Christmas from 10.30am to 4.30pm

Parking

The 1 hour free parking offer at Plymouth Guildhall, Plymouth Market and the Marks and Spencer car park will continue throughout December to help people nip in to pick up shopping.

And for late night shopping Thursdays, parking at Western Approach car park will be available for just £1 after 3pm.

Lights

Both the city centre and the Barbican have stunning Christmas light displays to add a much-needed festive touch.

Steve Hughes, chief executive of the Plymouth City Centre Company, said: “We’re delighted that our businesses can open again for that vital trading period up to Christmas. The Christmas lights are on, so we hope people will come in with friends or family to have a look around and enjoy the festivities and support our businesses at the same time.”

Councillor Mark Lowry, Cabinet member for finance and city centre champion said: “I’m beyond happy that these shops have been able to open and I would urge everyone to do their bit to help keep local jobs and businesses going by popping in and spending a few quid. You can help make all the difference.

“But while I know people will be eager to start their Christmas shopping, it’s important we are not all part of a mad rush. The shops are doing all they can to keep you safe, we are doing our bit and I would urge shoppers to bear in mind COVID-19 is still with us. Try to avoid shopping at peak times if you possibly can - many of the shops will be opening a lot later, make an evening of it. Enjoy the lights but keep wearing face coverings inside and try to keep your distance.”

Diane Mansell, Chief Executive of Plymouth Waterfront Partnership said: “Our waterfront businesses can’t wait to welcome you back when they reopen for the lead up to Christmas. With our family-friendly Polar Bear Trail returning on 5 December as a covid-safe festive activity it’s the perfect opportunity to get in some Christmas shopping and enjoy a walk in the fresh air. We hope that families and shoppers are able to come out and enjoy a safe and enjoyable time whilst supporting our fantastic shops, cafes and restaurants.”

Some shops are hoping to open for longer. For the latest information about opening hours and guidance visit shop4plymouth.co.uk and keep an eye on social media.
Top tips:
Remember follow the ‘Hands, Face, Space’ guidance:

  • Hands – wash your hands regularly and for 20 seconds
  • Face – wear a face covering in indoor settings where social distancing may be difficult, and where you will come into contact with people you do not normally meet
  • Space – stay 2 metres apart from people you do not live with where possible, or 1 metre with extra precautions in place (such as wearing face coverings)
  • Follow the procedures that shops have in place for social distancing and queueing to help keep you and those around you safe.
  • All shopping areas are expected to be busy, so visit off-peak where you can and are able to. Busiest times are anticipated to be weekends and late night Thursdays so where possible try to avoid the crowds and queues by shopping outside of these times.
  • If you have any Covid-19 symptoms stay at home and don’t risk spreading it to other people.
