The Box

It was another ‘huge’ moment for The Box as its giant woolly mammoth was revealed for the first time.

It was another ‘huge’ moment for The Box today as its fully assembled woolly mammoth was revealed for the first time.

The life-sized, as yet un-named female was inspired by a mammoth tooth in The Box’s collections, discovered at Yealm Bridge Cavern on the nearby Kitley Estate. Fossils show that woolly mammoths were roaming Plymouth 35,000 years ago, alongside bears, cave lions, hyenas and woolly rhinos.

Teachers and students can start planning their visits to The Box – thanks to a new schools programme which has launched today.

A flotilla of fabulous figureheads are returning to Plymouth to be displayed in The Box, after being restored in a hugely ambitious conservation project.

The 14 Royal Navy figureheads, weighing more than 20 tonnes, were carved in the 1800s and are on loan to The Box from the National Museums of the Royal Navy.
