garden waste

Plymouth's new administration has wasted little time in making a range of changes designed to make disposing of waste easier for residents.

New Council Leader Nick Kelly was chairing the first meeting of his new cabinet on Tuesday when he announced that the garden waste period would be extended, charges for non-household waste at Chelson Meadow will be scrapped and the delivery of new bins will now be free of charge.

Residents are being urged to sign up for next year’s garden waste collections in plenty of time.

As announced earlier this year, the service will be moving from bags to wheeled bins, in line with industry best practice.

Registration is now open with households who register before 7 January able to receive delivery of their new wheelie bin free of charge.

Also in the registration process is the option to order either a 140 litre or a 240 litre bin.

We’re working on plans to switch our garden waste collection service from bags to wheelie bins for the 2021 season.

There’s lots of preparation work to do as this is a big change for approximately 38,000 people who use the service

Garden waste collections will be back up and running on Monday 24 August.

To make up for the lack of collections in recent months we will now be extending the season until November.

However, instead of fortnightly, we will be running a four-weekly service for the remainder of the year. This means we expect each household to have three or four collections before the year is out.

We are planning to restart our garden waste collections by Monday 24 August – sooner if possible.

The service would normally have started up in April but had to be paused due to COVID-19 restrictions and the need to prioritise the city’s essential bin collections with reduced staff numbers.
