Mayflower 400

Containers of earth representing the four nations involved in the Mayflower 400 commemorations, together with a time capsule, have been placed inside the portico of the Mayflower monument ahead of a short ceremony which takes place on Wednesday 13 November to mark the end of its restoration.

Plymouth’s iconic Smeaton’s Tower is to get a new coat of paint as part of a massive work programme to get the city Mayflower ready.

The lighthouse on the Hoe is to get a makeover later this year to make sure the landmark looks its best for Plymouth’s seminal commemoration year 2020 – which marks 400 years since the Mayflower set sail for the New World.

Containers of earth representing the four nations involved in the Mayflower 400 commemorations, together with a time capsule, have been placed inside the newly restored portico at the Mayflower Steps.

Samples of earth from Leiden in the Netherlands, Plymouth, Massachusetts, the native American Wampanoag tribe and Plymouth in England have been sealed in the monument which has undergone an extensive restoration.
