Date stones

Online, sitting alongside the Plotting Plymouth's Past webpages, is a similar site for Plymouth City Plaques - but not all stones fit neatly into either of these two categories. A boundary stone depicts a property boundary; a commemorative plaque, generally added later, traditionally associates a person or an event with a specific location.

Foundation stones and opening plaques are different again - normally contemporary with the building or structure and often incorporated into the original fabric. Some simply denote ownership and/or the date of erection - in some ways mirroring certain boundary stones. A good group of such stones can be seen only from the water at Cattedown Wharves (DS CD).
