Overnight road closures for St Budeaux Square improvement work

A series of overnight road closures are coming up as the St Budeaux Square improvement scheme hits a crucial phase.

TCF ST Budeaux Road closure

Work is well underway on the scheme which is designed to transform the square and strengthen its role as a key public transport interchange. The scheme includes:

  • extending the bus layby and new bus shelters
  • a new loading bay on St Budeaux Square
  • improving public space with better footpath and lighting
  • space for a Beryl bike hub
  • new cycle parking
  • new directional signage
  • a new Real Time Passenger Information (RTPI) display for rail
  • new bus shelters.

The work got underway at the end of February and so far, benches have been moved to be cleaned, new kerbing is being laid and broken paving slabs replaced, and excavation has started to extend the bus bay.

From next Monday 22 April, Wolseley Road will close southbound for four nights until Thursday 25 April.

This is to enable the contractors South West Highways to carry out work to extend the bus bay safely as well as realigning the road and building new road islands to realign with new kerbs.

Wolseley Road will close from the junction of Trelawney Avenue to the Fletemoor Road junction. The right-turn into Barne Barton is also expected to be closed.

Bus services 2, 2A, 10, 11, 12, 21, 21A, 43 and 51 that would normally use this section of Wolseley Road southbound will be diverted from 7pm via Victoria Road, Peters Park Lane, Weston Mill Road, Fletemoor Road and then resume the normal route.

There will be a signposted diversion route mainly for HGVs via the A38, but smaller vehicles will be able to use, shorter local routes.

On Friday 26 April and Monday and Tuesday 29 and 30 April, Fletemoor Road will be closed overnight at its junction with Wolseley Road, with diversions in place.

From Tuesday 7 May until Thursday 9 May, Wolseley Road will again be closed overnight, with the same diversions as before, but with an additional restriction at Fletemoor Road.

A letter has been delivered to local residents and businesses to explain the overnight closure and notices are being put up at the affected bus stops with dates, times and diversion routes.

A spokesperson for the project said: “St Budeaux Square is a busy and popular shopping area, and the road a busy throughfare as well as a stopping point for lots of bus services and taxis.

“On this occasion we will be working at night to reduce the impact the work will have on residents’ travel and day-to-day business in the square. On balance, we think that night working is the quickest and safest approach.

“We know it is not ideal for residents who live nearby and we’d like to apologise in advance for any sleep lost, but we are doing all we can to keep noise down and disruption to a minimum.”

Due to finish by June 2024, the scheme is funded by the Transforming Cities Fund (TCF) and aims to make it easier for residents and commuters to walk, cycle and use public transport when they travel around Plymouth and surrounding area.
