This scheme forms part of a programme of investment through the Transforming Cities Fund (TCF), that collectively, helps reduce congestion, improve air quality and help the city prosper by investing in infrastructure to improve public and sustainable transport connectivity on key commuter routes across the city.

Scheme summary
The scheme on Royal Parade between Derry's Cross and St Andrew's Cross aims to increase the capacity for buses and improve the free flowing of public transport. The majority of bus routes that serve the city stop on Royal Parade, making it a key strategic location within the city.
The section of road is a significant point within the cities transport network. 158 buses stop on average in an hour, as well as significant numbers of public owned vehicles using the road at the same time, thus highlighting the need for improvement. The scheme aims to increase the capacity of Plymouth's principle bus interchange by inserting shallow saw-tooth bus stops along either side of the carriageway. This is in combination with a proposed bus lane in each direction.
The scheme will:
- offer significant benefits to Royal Parade by increasing the capacity of Plymouth's principle bus interchange
- offer benefits to bus routes throughout the city
- improve commuter and commercial traffic along the road
- offer reduced air pollution
- increase the attractiveness and capacity of sustainable bus transport across Plymouth.
