When a building is listed, the entire building is protected, both inside and out. This includes fixtures and fittings and land immediately surrounding the building.

Listed buildings are classified by their importance:
- Grade I: buildings of exceptional interest
- Grade II* (known as Grade 2 starred): buildings of more than special interest, often with fine interior
- Grade II: buildings of special interest

Historic England is responsible for listing buildings, although anyone can nominate a building.
