Localism and neighbourhood planning
In neighbourhoods across Plymouth, local communities are working on projects and plans to improve their area and we're interested in supporting communities where possible.
In the past central government has tried to 'improve people's lives by imposing decisions, setting targets and demanding inspections'
The government believes the key to strengthening society is to 'help people and their locally elected representatives achieve their own ambitions'
This is the essence of localism.
Rt Hon Greg Clark MP, Minister of State for Decentralisation from A Plain English Guide to the Localism Act
The Localism Act was given royal assent on 15 November 2011. The Act contains a number of proposals to give local authorities and local people new freedoms and flexibilities.
These include:
- Neighbourhood plans and development orders
- Assets of community value
- Community right to build
- Community Infrastructure Levy
We're keen to help neighbourhood and community groups understand the tools provided by the Localism Act. If you or your group are interested in any of the schemes provided through the Localism Act email planningpolicy@plymouth.gov.uk for more information.
