2020/21 School Sustainable Travel Grants

We’re thrilled to advise that 14 schools have successfully applied for a 2020/21 Plymotion School Sustainable Travel Grant.

The programme will see more than £85,000 invested in measures to encourage children to cycle and scoot on their school journey, before the end of the summer term with £30,323 of Council investment being matched by £57,942 of funding from the schools themselves.

The 14 schools who have secured the funding are:

  • Boringdon Primary School
  • The Cathedral School of St Mary
  • Coombe Dean School Academy
  • Ernesettle Community School
  • Laira Green Primary School
  • Leigham Primary School
  • Longcause Community Special School
  • Marine Academy Primary School
  • Mary Dean’s C of E Primary School
  • Pennycross Primary School
  • St Edwards C of E Primary School
  • St Peters RC Primary School
  • Weston Mill Community Primary Academy
  • Yealmpstone Farm Primary School.

On awarding the funding Councillor Mark Coker, Cabinet Member for Strategic Planning and Infrastructure said “I’m delighted that, through the Plymotion grants, we’re able to help schools invest in measures they think will make a real impact on helping more children cycle and scoot to school.

I was really impressed by the range of schemes schools proposed and am thrilled during what remains a very challenging time for schools that we’re able to help invest in measures which, hopefully, will bring a lot of fun and enjoyment to school communities, and establish active travel behaviors.”

The grants are intended to encourage and sustain, an increase in the number of cycling, walking, and scooter trips to and from schools, improve the perception of sustainable travel amongst their entire school community and reduce carbon emissions.

The 14 schools will be using the funding to provide cycle tracks and trails to encourage exercise and improve cycling skills, new storage for bikes and scooters, and balance bikes and scooters which will help pupils improve their confidence and ability to ride a bike or scoot to and from school.

Matthew Bromhead a teacher from St Peters RC Primary School said “We will be using this grant to encourage families in our school community to be more active, together. The money will allow us to purchase a brand-new fleet of bikes and equipment, for all ages and sizes. We will then be setting up a loan scheme so families of our school can borrow the bikes and get active outside, as a family. We hope that this will show the benefits of cycling, exercise, and spending time outdoors, and encourage families to spend more time cycling, walking, and getting healthy.”

Congratulations again to the successful schools.
