Plymouth nightlife recognised for safety with Purple Flag

Purple Flag

Even during a global pandemic and a tough time for the night time economy, businesses, staff and partners have ensured Plymouth’s nightlife remains vibrant, exciting and safe - and we’re flying the purple flag again to prove it!

The ‘Purple Flag’ accreditation is given to cities and towns that meet or surpass the standards of excellence in managing its evening and night-time economy.

The city was assessed on elements such as community, entertainment, partnership working, transport (including pedestrian routes, lighting and parking), identity and much more. The panel were really impressed with the renewal application and that Plymouth would be used as an example of best practice of renewal completion to other areas.

Partners have worked closely to ensure businesses in the evening and night time economy have been supported during this difficult time.

Additional guidance has been provided on a regular basis to ensure everyone is clear on how to comply with the legislation and reopen their businesses safely and successfully.

Councillor Sally Haydon, Cabinet Member for Community Safety said: “We are really pleased with such positive feedback.  Staff and businesses have both worked exceptionally hard to ensure that Plymouth remains a safe and fun night out during the pandemic, and this award goes to show how resilient and capable our businesses are.”

Neighbourhood Inspector Robin Loveridge of Devon & Cornwall Police said: “As the south neighbourhood inspector and portfolio holder for the night-time economy in Plymouth, I am delighted that that we have maintained the standards required to ensure we continue to be awarded the Purple Flag accreditation.

“There is a real sense of partnership working within the city, a true sense of working together with people focussed on making Plymouth an even safer place for people to visit and enjoy at night.”

Cat Macdonald of Best Bar None added: “Purple Flag accreditation is a huge achievement for Plymouth and reinforces the fantastic work that we are delivering in partnership to offer an entertaining, diverse, safe and enjoyable night out.

“Regaining the accreditation shows the depth and resilience of our partnership and recognises the hard work, engagement and commitment of those who work in the night time economy.”

Steve Hughes, chief executive of the Plymouth City Centre Company added: “We are delighted that Plymouth has maintained the Purple Flag status. This shows Plymouth is a safe and welcoming city and is hugely important in enabling us to attract more visitors. It’s good news for all our businesses and will give confidence to investors, helping us to make the city centre even more vibrant.”

Diane Mansell, chief executive of Plymouth Waterfront Partnership said: “The Purple Flag status is brilliant for the night time economy on the Barbican, it goes to show how exceptionally hard partners and businesses work to ensure customer safety. This achievement in these trying times is fantastic for the city and the businesses on the waterfront.”
