Private property and miscellaneous markers

Private boundary stones tend to be erected by large land owners or in locations where land ownership may become an issue. Included below are stones laid by the owners of mercantile docks and wharves, alongside markers associated with railways and roads. Some private property owners also marked their boundaries.

Not all the inscriptions are understood. Email museum@plymouth.gov.uk if you've any further information.

Miscellaneous

Falling into the category of miscellaneous are a handful of rather more unusual markers associated with underground utilities. Perhaps of most interest are the GPO Telegraph Cablw (TM) markers, in cast iron and bearing the Royal Cypher. There are also a few unusual South West Gas Board (SWGB) markers.

There are also a few that are currently unidentified and, for now, truly miscellaneous (M).
