Remembrance Sunday Service on Plymouth Hoe

The Lord Mayor, Councillor Sue Dann and the Lord Mayor’s Consort, Councillor Chris Mavin will be joined by the Deputy Lieutenant of Devon for this year's Remembrance Sunday Service on Plymouth Hoe.

The Deputy Lord Mayor, Deputy Lord Mayor’s Consort, Council Leader, Leader of the Labour Party group and Council Chief Executive will also attend the service, which will remember all those who lost their lives in both World Wars and in all conflicts.*

The service will begin with a two-minute silence at the Royal Naval Memorial at 11am.

The Deputy Lieutenant of Devon will lay a wreath, followed by the Lord Mayor (on behalf of the people of Plymouth) and then the Naval Base Commander and other representatives of the armed forces.

This year the service will be joined by personnel from the visiting Danish ship, HDMS Niels Juel, who will lay a wreath.

A veteran will also lay a wreath to mark the 40th anniversary of the Falklands conflict, which saw Royal Navy, Royal Marines and Army units from the city deployed as part of British efforts to liberate the islands in the South Atlantic.

Wreaths will then be laid by children representing service families from across the city, along with pupils from local schools.

The Bishop of Plymouth, Revd Preb James Grier will conduct the service, which will last for around 20 minutes.

Members of the public and local organisations will be invited to pay their respects and lay their personal wreaths at the end of the service, on the north side of the memorial, following the departure of the civic dignitaries.

The processional party will then take their places at the Civilian Memorial in Lockyer Street, where the Bishop of Plymouth will say a prayer, followed by a poem read by Arezoo Farahzad on behalf of the multi-faith community. Wreaths will be laid there by the Lord Mayor, Naval Base Commander (on behalf of the armed forces) and Gary Streeter MP (on behalf of all the local Members of Parliament), followed by representatives from various services and organisations.

Members of the public are reminded that parking around the Hoe is limited. Some spaces will be available on the Hoe Promenade for blue badge holders but this will be on a first come, first served basis. A limited number of seats will also be available within the main arena for veterans but must be reserved in advance – please email lordmayor@plymouth.gov.uk or call 01752 304858 as soon as possible and no later than Thursday 10 November.

The Lord Mayor said: “Remembrance Sunday is an important occasion for Plymouth and brings us all together each year to commemorate the service and sacrifice of those who have given their lives for our country.

“This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Falklands conflict and we pay tribute to all those from or based in Plymouth who defended the territory from Argentine invasion, as well as remember those we so sadly lost. We are proud to have honoured their service, bravery and sacrifice by bestowing upon them the Freedom of the City earlier this year.

“And, of course, we lost our beloved Queen Elizabeth II who, as our Commander in Chief and the first female of the Royal Family to be an active duty member of the British Armed Forces, led the whole nation for so many years in remembering those who have died in world wars and conflicts.”

Plymouth's Remembrance Sunday Service will be streamed on our YouTube channel.

* Representatives of Plymouth’s other political groups will be attending other remembrance events.
