As part of a new multi-agency commission, aimed at tackling violence against women and girls, local people are invited to share their views about how safety could be improved.
On the 13 December at 6.30pm, a virtual Q and A will be hosted where representatives from key city organisations and partnerships will talk about the vast amount of work that is already being under taken to address violence against women and girls. It will also be a chance for local people to give their views on what more needs to be done.
The panel will be hosted by Councillor Rebecca Smith, the Chair of the new Violence Against Women and Girls Commission. She will be joined by:
- Chief Superintendent Matt Longman (Chair of Safer Plymouth – the city’s community safety partnership)
- Alison Hernandez (Police and Crime Commissioner)
- Matt Garrett (Service Director for Community Connections at Plymouth City Council)
- Hannah Shead and Lyn Gooding (Joint Chairs of the Domestic Abuse and Sexual Violence Local Partnership Board of Safer Plymouth)
Whilst the Commission is still being set up, it aims to start work before Christmas. The issues and discussion at the Q and A will help inform their work.

Councillor Rebecca Smith, Chair of the Violence Against Women and Girls Commission for Plymouth, said: “I know that there is so much that is already being done in our city to address the culture change that is needed and also try and make the streets as safe as possible for women and girls. I think it is important that we all understand what is happening already.
“However, I also realise that there is much more that can be done. So the views of people across the city will be crucial to informing the work of the Commission.
“I am particularly keen that women and girls across the city feel that their voices are heard as we seek to make Plymouth safer and would encourage anyone who is keen to find out more to come along and ask their questions.”
The event will be using Zoom Webinar, participants will be able to give their views by typing in their questions in the chat function. Joining instructions will be sent 24 hours and 30 minutes before the event. Deadline to register is 5pm on the 13 December 2021.
