Children with hearing/visual impairments

We facilitate successful inclusion for children and young people (CYP) with a sensory impairment by supporting and enabling independent learning and the development of appropriate life skills.  We work with CYP from birth to 19 years who are Deaf or Hearing Impaired, Visually Impaired, Deafblind or Dual Sensory Impaired who need support and/or advice (for themselves / their family / their educational setting) in order to access the curriculum and environment at the same level as their peers.

Who we are

The Advisory Team for Sensory Support is made up of:

  • 2 x Qualified Teachers for Visually Impaired Children (including the qualification to teach Grade II Braille)
  • 1 x Mobility, Access and Inclusion Worker (employed by Guide Dogs)
  • 2 x Qualified Teachers for Deaf Children
  • 1 x Deaf Access and Inclusion Worker

What we do

  • Provide advice and support for CYP, their families and educational settings
  • Carry out direct teaching with CYP
  • Provide training
  • Carry out assessments
  • Liaise with other relevant professionals
  • Carry out registration visits (visual impairment)

Specialist Equipment Pathway:

We work with families, local health services  and education settings to assess the individual needs of children and young people. This enables us to identify specific needs and explore appropriate provision of specialist education equipment
