Statement on Health and Social Care Announcement

The Deputy Leader of Plymouth City Council and the Cabinet Member responsible for Health and Adult Social Care, has welcomed today’s publication of Build Back Better Our Plan for Health and Social Care.

Councillor Patrick Nicholson said: “We welcome the Prime Minister’s announcement and the publication of the Build Back Better Our Plan for Health and Social Care, which will see a total of £5.4 billion invested in adult social care over the next three years across the country.

“Social care accounts for around 45 per cent of our total revenue budget so the rising cost of protecting the most vulnerable residents in Plymouth has been an ongoing challenge. The funding of social care has been a huge challenge for local government for many years as both demand and the complexity of care has increased.

“As a sector, we have been waiting many years for a solution, so we welcome this significant progress in finally starting to address the issue. However, we need to see the detail, particularly how soon hard pressed local authority social care teams will see some of the additional funding that will be available. As such we look forward to the publication of the White Paper later this year that will set out the details

“We recognise the importance of care and the role carers play and would support any investment in front line workers.”
