The young people of Plymouth are being invited to have their say on the climate emergency.

The inaugural Young People's Climate Emergency summit, organised by the Plymouth Youth Parliament, will take place at the Guildhall on Friday.

Running from 11am until 4pm, a series of workshops and staffed information stands will be asking the young people whether there is more that Plymouth could be doing to address the climate emergency and how they see their role in that.

The aim of the event is to bring young people together to explore and inform climate related themes, before culminating in discussions on next steps and future challenges.

Councillor Dave Downie, Cabinet member for Education, Skills and Children and Young People, said: "It's a well-worn cliché, but the young people of today are the tax paying residents of the future, so I'm really pleased to be able to involve them in this important debate.

"I know how passionate the Youth Parliament are on climate change and so I look forward to an interesting and thought provoking event."

Councillor Maddi Bridgeman, Cabinet member for the Environment and Street Scene, added: "I'm really looking forward to listening to the ideas that young people have to fight the climate emergency.

"No idea is a bad one - we must explore many avenues to help us in our effort to be a carbon neutral city by 2030."

Included in the workshops and stands organised for the event are Liketobe with Antony Jinman, Plymotion, Ocean Conservation Trust, Environmentally sustainable diets with Dr Clare Pettinger and Moths to a Flame, among others. This is proving to be an exciting event where young people can discuss their ideas and take part in interactive activities.

Young people have been clear that they want would not want the message of the summit be diluted by the serving of food that goes against the ethos of the day as well as being an integral part of some of their lives.  As such they have elected to have an all vegan event.

If you are, or know of a young person aged 11 to 19 who would like to attend the event, spaces can be booked by emailing UKYP@plymouth.gov.uk
