Getting into a good routine can be really useful and helps children when they’re going back to school.

Different routines will work for different age ranges, but predictability can help to reduce anxiety and helps children to feel safe and secure. Establishing consistent sleep schedules, wake-up times and healthy eating habits that suits you as a family can really help with this.

Barnardo’s have lots of tips and advice to build routines and manage behaviour, depending on the age of your child. They also have a useful guide for parents whose children are starting primary school, with ideas to help both you and your child feel confident as they take their next steps.

For older children, BBC Bitesize has some great guidance for teenagers to help get them into a good routine at secondary school.

The Sleep Charity also has a guide to creating a good bedtime routine for children.

Your child’s new school setting will also be able to help if you would like advice on building routines. They can help with guidance that reflects the best way of communicating with your child.
