Elected members joined together today (18 March) to support the local charity Trevi, and their ‘Enough’ campaign, aimed at tackling Violence Against Women and Girls in Plymouth (VAWG)

At the Full Council meeting today (18 March) a cross-party group of councillors came together to wear black and white sashes with the wording ‘Enough’ across, to show a public message of support for the campaign. Trevi were present before the meeting with a stand to talk about the campaign and how people can get involved and support.

Trevi launched their city-wide campaign during the annual 16 Days of Activism last year (25 November to 10 December) signalling to everyone in Plymouth that we are calling time on violence against women and girls and inviting others to do the same.

During the 16 days, the ‘Enough’ campaign was to be seen in many parts of the city, this included billboards, walls, and banners across Plymouth, and the digital screen at The Barcode.

Trevi were also present at awareness raising events during the 16 days, aimed to make people aware of the campaign. They have continued campaigning by running a Reclaim the Night event supported by the Arts University during Sexual Violence Awareness Week earlier this year, and a conference, aimed at shining a light on the harmful effects of pornography within society.

Councillor Sally Haydon, Plymouth City Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Safety, informed those who were present at the photo opportunity the importance of coming together to support the city-wide campaign, and how we can continue campaigning against VAWG going forward, as it is incumbent to continue to support all throughout the year, not just during the 16 Days of Activism.

Councillor Haydon said: “It is vital that we acknowledge this city-wide campaign and we all come together to support Trevi.

“There is a lot of excellent work happening across the city aimed at raising awareness and helping to tackle and prevent Violence Against Women and Girls, but we can always do more. We are committed to creating positive cultural change and making Plymouth a safer city.”

Councillor Zoe Reilly, Violence Against Women and Girls Champion, added: “Enough is enough and it is crucial that we stay loud and support the campaign. We need to keep pushing this key message to make sure that everyone is singing from the same hymn sheet. Whether you are an organisation, school, individual or business – stand strong and say ‘enough’ to violence against women and girls."

Hannah Shead, CEO, Trevi said: “We are thrilled at the momentum the ‘Enough’ campaign has gained across the city. It's important for everyone to help end violence against women and girls and make our community safe. We will continue to work with our local partners to create positive cultural change and build a society that doesn't tolerate harm and abuse toward women and girls. We are proud that our city, Plymouth, is pioneering this.”
