Digital library card

A digital library card with the Plymouth Libraries app

The benefits of a digital library card with the Plymouth Libraries app:

  • renew books from your phone or tablet
  • scan the barcode within the app on the self-service machines to borrow and renew books
  • a plastic-free alternative to a library card
  • view loans and easily keep track of return dates
  • view any charges accrued
  • view existing book reservations
  • search our catalogue to see what titles we have available and which library they are currently located
  • reserve books and choose which library to collect them from
  • link to your children’s library account
  • see where the nearest library is and check the opening hours of all Plymouth libraries
  • links to our social media pages
  • link to our regular activity and events calendar so you can keep up to date
  • the app allows you to scan the barcode on the back of any book anywhere, then search the catalogue to see if you can borrow a copy from us
  • having the app on your phone makes it more easily accessible

You can choose to have a digital library card by using the Plymouth Libraries app instead of a physical library card. Your digital library card (barcode) will be on the app on your phone or tablet.

Accessing your digital library card (new members)

  • once you have joined the library, visit a library or email and ask for a digital library card number
  • visit your App store and search for Plymouth Libraries (by Solus UK Ltd)
  • download the app
  • open the app and go to the three lines in the top right-hand corner of the app to open the menu
  • log into the app with your digital library card number and PIN

Existing library members

If you are already a library member and you have a plastic library card, you can also use the Plymouth Libraries app by logging in with your current (plastic) library card number and PIN. If you do not know your PIN or are having problems logging into the app, please speak to library staff or email

Once you are logged in, you will be able to view your barcode (digital library card).
