Downfield open space is a nine hectare expanse of greenspace (more like a nature reserve than a park). The greenspace offers views north to the southern edge of Dartmoor National Park.

The park offers a more natural experience than most parks with several habitats including marshland, with species such as meadowsweet and marsh thistle, grasslands including yellow rattle and common knapweed, mature woodlands and the Chaddlewood Stream. There is a wildflower meadow that has also been planted in the park.
National Cycle Network (NCN) Route 2 runs through the park providing links to surrounding areas. The walking routes are steep and unsurfaced giving the park a country feel.
