Downfield open space is a 9 hectare expanse of greenspace (more like a nature reserve than a park). The greenspace offers views north to the southern edge of Dartmoor National Park.

The park offers a more natural experience than most parks with several habitats including marshland, with species such as meadowsweet and marsh thistle, grasslands including yellow rattle and common knapweed, mature woodlands and the Chaddlewood Stream. A wildflower meadow has also been planted in the park.
