Could you be a city councillor?

Elections for Plymouth City Council and the Police and Crime Commissioner for Devon and Cornwall are due to take place on Thursday 2 May.

If you have ever considered becoming a city councillor there’s a chance to find out more about what is involved on Thursday 7 March.

We are holding a ‘Becoming a Councillor’ event, where you can learn more about what the role entails, who is eligible and how to put yourself forward for election.

Being an effective councillor requires commitment and hard work but it can be incredibly rewarding. There are around 17,000 local councillors in England (including 57 in Plymouth), each elected to represent their community and help improve residents’ quality of life.

Councillors come from all walks of life but have one thing in common – they care passionately about Plymouth, tackling the issues local people face and making a positive difference.

The event, led by Chief Executive Tracey Lee, will cover electoral processes including the elections’ key dates, nominations, election agents as well as information about the photo ID requirements for voting in person.

It will take place from 5.30pm to 7pm at the Council House in Armada Way (next to the former Civic Centre), as well as online via Microsoft Teams, to give as many people as possible an opportunity to attend.

For those attending in person there will be a chance to look around the Council House and Chamber (where all the major democratic decisions are made) and ask questions. Tea and coffee will be provided.

Whether you choose to join in person or online you must book in advance – please call 01752 398164 or email chiefexecutivebusinesssupportunit@plymouth.gov.uk as soon as possible.
