Council pleased by confirmation of new hospital building

Date

The Government’s announcement confirming that Derriford Hospital will receive a new Emergency Care Building has been welcomed by Plymouth councillors.

Council Leader Tudor Evans said: “This is great news for the people of Plymouth.

"The government inherited a programme that was unfunded beyond 2025, which meant schemes did not have the funding confirmation they needed to deliver.

"We want our city to be a brilliant place to live where everyone enjoys an outstanding quality of life, and being able to access high quality, timely healthcare is an absolutely essential part of this. It is clear that these improvements are desperately needed and I’m pleased to hear that work on the new building will be progressed at pace.”

Councillor Mary Aspinall, Cabinet Member for Health and Adult Social Care said: “This is absolutely fantastic news for Plymouth and I’m delighted that the long-awaited Emergency Care Building will be part of the first wave of new hospital buildings across the country.

“This investment is extremely important for the health and wellbeing of our residents. Derriford Hospital serves a growing population and for too long, local residents have experienced long wait times for emergency care. We look forward to seeing the development of this new modern facility, which will enable hardworking NHS staff to deliver the best possible care to patients.”
