Flood warnings for Plymouth tomorrow morning

Date

Residents, visitors and businesses on the Barbican and around the city’s estuary areas are being warned of possible flooding tomorrow morning (Wednesday 16 December) due to high tides and strong winds.

Force 8 southerly winds and offshore wave heights of up to 4.5m are forecast, with higher than predicted tides and heavy rain, which may lead to localised surface water flooding.

The Environment Agency has issued two flood warnings, one for the Barbican and the other covering a wider area, from Rame Head to Wembury Bay.

Locations at risk include the Barbican/Sutton Harbour, Bretonside, St Budeaux, Stonehouse, Laira, Marsh Mills, Embankment Road and the Torpoint Ferry terminal.

The highest water is expected around 6.30am but areas could be affected two hours either side of this time.

Residents and business are being advised to be protect properties or premises that may be at risk of flooding in these areas. Large waves and spray are likely and people are advised to take care near coastal paths and promenades. Mount Batten Pier has been closed to the public.

Our highways crews are on standby to respond to any issues that arise and temporary flood barriers will be put in place to help prevent flooding by overtopping at high tide. If roads are affected flood drivers are urged to take care and not try to drive through flood water.

We will be monitoring the situation and any important updates will be issued on Twitter and Facebook. Check the Environment Agency website for the latest flood warnings and guidance.
