Flying the flag for careers in Plymouth

National Careers Week (4 to 9 March) will see organisations across the country celebrating careers guidance and education, and increasing awareness of career opportunities as they inform and inspire people of all ages on their journeys.

Skills Launchpad Plymouth has a huge wealth of localised resources available to help anyone aged over 16 years old to access careers information, advice and guidance, and will be running a series of events throughout the week to help people find the opportunities that suit them. Based on the first floor of Barclays Bank in the city centre, activities on Tuesday (5 March) and Wednesday (6 March) include drop-in sessions for advice on some of Plymouth’s key sectors, including construction and the built environment, health and social care, and the green economy. Employer representatives from Babcock, the Army and GHQ will also be on hand to showcase careers in the HM Armed Forces, hair and beauty, and marine and defence industries.

Councillor Sally Cresswell, Cabinet Member for Education, Skills and Apprenticeships, said: “Raising aspirations and inspiring our young people and residents to develop their careers relies on good awareness and ensuring access to quality careers information, advice and guidance. Thank you to everyone in the city that provides this vital education and to our employers and partners engaged through Skills Launchpad Plymouth including the National Careers Service, where together we deliver a one-stop-shop service to connect businesses and local people with opportunities for skills, training, education, careers and jobs.”

Also during National Careers Week, Building Plymouth is offering a unique chance for local people to see ‘behind-the-scenes’ at ten major ‘live’ construction sites across the city including hospital and heritage projects, the largest local infrastructure project, public realm work in the city centre as well as mobility hubs and university builds. School children, youth groups, job seekers and transitioning military service leavers are among those attending these experiences.

David Bayliss, Regional Director at Stride Treglown and Chair of Building Plymouth, said: “Building Plymouth is once again hosting an exciting week long programme of site openings offering a unique opportunity for local people to learn more about the fantastic careers in construction and the built environment. Tying this into National Careers Week, we look forward to inspiring young people and adults alike and promoting the breadth of 180+ careers and pathways in the industry, and the fantastic opportunities being created through Plymouth’s biggest capital build investment in 25 years. We also look forward to welcoming job seekers, career changers and young people to our Early Careers Fair where we will be showcasing apprenticeship, graduate and job opportunities.”

For those interested in building a career in Plymouth’s construction, engineering and/or manufacturing sectors, National Careers Week will conclude with the Early Careers Fair hosted by Building Plymouth and the Plymouth Manufacturers Group on Saturday 9 March, 10am to 2pm at Home Park.
