Join the Poppy Wave Project for Remembrance Sunday

We are looking for volunteers to help bring an ambitious outdoor poppy display to life ahead of Remembrance Sunday.

Poppies
Example of poppies already made for the display.

The plan, developed by Armed Forces Champion, Councillor Pauline Murphy, will see a wave of handmade-weatherproof poppies hung from the Council House, using a camouflage net donated by 29 Commando.

We’re enlisting support from residents, community groups, schools, knitting clubs and Council staff to make hundreds of poppies from weatherproof materials, which will be attached to net and suspended from the balcony of the Council House to create a wave.

Those interested in taking part will need to hand their poppies in to the Council House reception desk by Friday 13 October at the latest.

The poppies will be displayed on the balcony of the Council House from Monday 23 October until Remembrance Sunday (12 November).

For safety reasons, the display will be raised every evening by the Council House security staff and then lowered again the next morning. The display will be raised during the weekends.

Councillor Murphy said: “It is so important to remember the service and sacrifice of all of those that lost their lives as a result of conflict. The poppies symbolise both remembrance and hope for a peaceful future.

“This project aims to honour the Armed Forces community and as President of the Federation of Ex-Services, and the Royal British Legion Crownhill Branch, I am really passionate about honouring those who have served our country and remembering their bravery, this is so important to me.”
