Looking after our key car parks

We are going to invest in some of our key car parks in and around the city centre with plans to introduce greener payment systems.
The work planned will prolong their life span and help them last for another two decades. it includes waterproofing and replacing expansion joints at:

  • Western Approach
  • Theatre Royal Car Park
  • Mayflower East Car Park
  • Mutley Plain Car Park
  • Regent Street Car Park

A decision signed today by Council Leader Tudor Evans OBE gives the green light to a £2 million investment, with £1.6 million for structural maintenance over the next 20 years and £400,000 to replace payment systems over the next 15 years.

He said: “It’s like owning a house. You need to spend some money from time to time, so we are planning ahead and making sure our facilities are up to scratch for the next few decades.

"What’s more, we’re looking to replace ticket machines for more environmentally friendly systems to reduce our carbon footprint. The new system will be paper-free and could mean that drivers can pay online for tickets before they leave the house! Technology is developing all the time and these small measures all add up to making a big difference to the customer and to the environment.”

Once the decision has been given the go ahead officers will be able to start procurement exercises for maintenance contracts as well as replacement payment systems. The decision is made under delegated authority and is subject to call in.
